A Charlotte community is grieving the death of 16-year-old Juliana Nzita, originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who was found dead days after being reported missing.

Missing Person Report

Juliana was reported missing on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. Her disappearance prompted a search by relatives and local residents.

Discovery of the Body

Community volunteer Kenneth Tolbert, known as “Mufasa,” discovered Juliana on Friday, May 8, near The United House of Prayer for All People on West Sugar Creek Road. Tolbert was walking with his service dog, Cosmo, when he noticed what appeared to be a teenage girl hanging from a tree. He immediately alerted church members and called police.

Scene Details

Video footage reportedly showed shock among church members at the scene. A small blue chair was beneath the tree, with a rope tied above it. Juliana’s feet appeared to still touch the ground at the time of discovery.

Police Report

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed Juliana was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m. on May 8 at the 4200 block of West Sugar Creek Road. Her death has been officially ruled a suicide.

Community Impact

Juliana’s disappearance and death have sparked grief and concern in Charlotte, particularly among immigrant and African communities. Attempts to contact her family and church representatives were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
