Law enforcement violently seized cyclist who was injured by a car moments before: 'This is not acceptable'

A North Charleston cyclist was handcuffed by law enforcement moments after being struck by a vehicle on Ashley Phosphate Road on May 14.

The Incident

The cyclist was hit by a car, flipped off his bike, and landed in the roadway. He moved his bike out of traffic and began speaking with the driver, who appeared apologetic. A nearby sheriff’s deputy then handcuffed the cyclist, pushing him to the ground and restraining him, while a North Charleston police officer assisted. Witnesses captured the encounter on video, showing the cyclist moaning as officers knelt beside him.

Eyewitness Accounts

Bystander Shada Crawford said the cyclist “did nothing wrong” and questioned the officers’ actions. The driver also posted a video, expressing disbelief that the victim was being arrested.

Police Statement

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said the cyclist refused commands and approached the deputy, prompting an investigative detention. North Charleston police stated the man resisted handcuffing. Both departments said officers followed training and policy. The sheriff’s office is reviewing the incident.
