A Summerville man will serve over two decades in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to a 2022 shooting that killed two people.

Conviction and Sentence

Dejuan Smith pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter, reduced from the original murder charges. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison, with credit for time already served.

The Shooting

The incident occurred in March 2022 outside the Sangaree Library. Witnesses said the victims, 15-year-old Malaki Mazyck and 18-year-old Kenyon Johnson, had arranged to sell a gun to Smith. After receiving the weapon, Smith allegedly fired at both victims. Mazyck died at Brighton Park Emergency Department, while Johnson was pronounced dead at Trident Medical Center on March 3, 2022.

Investigation Details

Investigators found spent shell casings, broken glass, and blood in the victims’ vehicle and parking lot. The crime stemmed from a gun sale arranged via Snapchat, and witnesses confirmed the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
