A North Charleston man was arrested early Friday morning after police said he fled from a traffic stop and crashed his vehicle.
Driver Failed to Stop for Officers
According to the North Charleston Police Department, officers attempted to stop a vehicle around 2:35 a.m. near Peppermill Parkway and Ashley Phosphate Road after the driver allegedly ran a stop sign.
Police said the driver ignored emergency lights and sirens and sped through a gas station parking lot before turning onto Industry Drive.
Crash Occurred During Pursuit
Authorities identified the driver as Keyonte Michael Gambrell, 21, of North Charleston.
Investigators said Gambrell was driving above the posted speed limit before losing control of the vehicle.
The car reportedly left the roadway and crashed into trees and bushes before stopping.
Passenger Injured in Crash
Police said a passenger inside the vehicle suffered injuries during the crash.
Officers provided first aid at the scene before EMS transported the passenger for medical treatment.
Officers Found Marijuana and Gun
During a search of the vehicle, authorities said officers recovered suspected marijuana from the driver’s side door and Gambrell’s pocket.
Police also found a handgun loaded with 12 rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber.
Investigators said both Gambrell and the passenger denied ownership of the firearm, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Charges Filed
Gambrell was charged with:
- Failure to stop for blue lights
- Disregarding a stop sign
He was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
