Rock Hill’s free My Ride bus service will end on May 22, leaving many riders concerned about how they will travel to work, appointments, and other daily activities.
Free Bus Service Ending in Rock Hill
The My Ride system has operated in Rock Hill since 2019 and recorded nearly 215,000 passenger trips between 2024 and 2025.
City officials said the service is shutting down because the company that manufactured the electric buses filed for bankruptcy in 2023, making repairs and replacement parts difficult to obtain.
By the end of last year, only three or four of the city’s 10 buses were still operating.
Riders Concerned About Transportation Costs
Many residents said the free bus service helped them save money while travelling to work and medical appointments.
Some riders now worry they will have to rely on paid transportation options like Uber or taxis after the service ends.
Others expressed concern about the added financial burden of paying for daily travel.
Alternative Service Will Cost Riders
City leaders said York County Access transportation will replace My Ride services.
The new system will charge riders $2.50 for each one-way trip and will offer door-to-door transportation.
Officials said part of the cost will be covered through federal funding and the city’s general fund.
City Hopes New System Will Help Residents
Rock Hill officials said York County Access already operates throughout the area and provides more flexible transportation options.
City leaders said they hope the replacement system will continue meeting residents’ transit needs after My Ride ends later this month.
