A Delta Air Lines flight was forced to return to the gate at Miami International Airport after a passenger, identified as Shannon Marie Harris, refused to hang up her phone before takeoff, leading to widespread frustration among passengers.
The Incident
On Monday, April 27, flight Delta 1323 was preparing for its journey from Miami to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when Harris, 46, was asked by flight attendants to end her phone call. Despite being told repeatedly to hang up, Harris reportedly became belligerent as the plane was about to take off.
As a result of her refusal to comply, the pilots decided to turn the plane back around to the gate. Once at the gate, Harris was asked to deboard but refused to leave the aircraft, prompting flight crew to request that all passengers get off the plane as well.
Passenger Outrage
Witnesses on board expressed their frustration with the situation. According to reports from WSB-TV, passengers began chanting “get off the plane” as Harris refused to comply. One traveler even asked aloud, “So we’re all supposed to listen, and she doesn’t?”
The tension escalated as flight attendants struggled to keep the peace, repeatedly urging passengers to “remain calm” as the situation unfolded. Despite the crew’s efforts, the anger among the passengers was palpable, with many groaning in frustration when the announcement was made that they would have to deboard due to Harris’s actions.
Arrests and Charges
Harris, along with another unidentified passenger, was taken into custody after being removed from the plane. She was charged with trespassing and later released on a $500 bond.
Flight Delays
As a result of the disruption, Delta flight 1323 was delayed by about an hour. Once the situation was resolved, the flight finally departed, though the events left passengers shaken and frustrated.
