A 33-year-old man has been detained in connection with an alleged plot to attack Princess Catharina-Amalia and Princess Alexia of the Netherlands. The man is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, May 4, 2026, as part of the ongoing investigation into the disturbing threats against the Dutch royal family.
Alleged Possession of Weapons and Threatening Materials
According to a court scheduling order published by the Hague Public Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect was found in possession of two axes in early February. These axes were reportedly engraved with disturbing messages, including the names “Alexia” and “Mossad” (the Israeli national intelligence agency), as well as the Nazi salute “Sieg Heil”. Additionally, a handwritten note was found with the words “Amalia,” “Alexia” and “Bloodbath”.
These items have raised significant concerns, leading investigators to suspect the man may have been targeting Princess Catharina-Amalia (22) and Princess Alexia (20), the eldest two daughters of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.
Background on Princess Amalia’s Safety Concerns
This is not the first time Princess Amalia has faced serious threats to her safety. In 2022, she was forced to leave her student housing while attending the University of Amsterdam due to safety concerns. Her mother, Queen Máxima, discussed the significant impact this had on Amalia’s life, stating, “It has huge consequences for her life… she can’t really go outside.”
In 2024, it was revealed that Amalia had secretly relocated to Madrid to continue her studies in safety and to live a more normal student life. During an appearance for King’s Day celebrations on April 27, 2024, Amalia commented on her move, saying, “Of course, it was strange circumstances that made me go there. I’m still very grateful to everyone who made it possible for me to walk around there in freedom. I managed to find a little more freedom there than was possible here.”
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The Hague Public Prosecutor’s Office has not disclosed the name of the suspect, but the arrest has raised serious concerns about the safety of the Dutch royal family. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide more details as the case unfolds.
The Dutch Royal House has not immediately responded to media requests for comment. However, the case highlights the ongoing challenges and risks faced by royals in the public eye, especially in light of Amalia’s previous experiences with threats.
