This is one of the most disturbing criminal cases reported from Louisiana and nearby Mississippi, involving the brutal murder of a mother, the kidnapping of her two young daughters, and horrific crimes committed against them. The case has shocked many due to the level of violence and the involvement of more than one person.
What Happened in the Case?
According to prosecutors, the incident began on June 11, 2024, when a man named Daniel Callihan killed a woman in her home in Louisiana. After committing the murder, he abducted her two daughters, aged 6 and 4.
He then drove the children about 70 miles north of New Orleans into Mississippi. This marked the start of a tragic series of events that crossed state lines.
Role of the Second Accused
Prosecutors say that Victoria Cox later became involved in the crime. She allegedly travelled to join Callihan after the kidnapping had already taken place.
Authorities claimed:
- She participated in criminal acts involving the older child
- She helped in actions that obstructed justice
- She later admitted involvement during questioning by federal agents
Because of her cooperation with investigators, some of the original serious charges against her were reduced.
Tragic Outcome for the Children
The case took a devastating turn when:
- The younger child, aged 4, was killed
- The older child, aged 6, was found alive but had suffered severe trauma
The girls were reported missing on June 13, after a relative discovered their mother’s body at home and alerted police.
A large search operation was launched involving local, state, and federal authorities. Later that same day:
- The mother’s car was located
- Police traced it to a property where the suspect was hiding
The older child was found alive at the location, while her younger sister was found dead.
Arrests and Legal Developments
Both suspects were taken into custody shortly after the children were found.
Daniel Callihan has since pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges across different courts, including:
- Capital murder
- Kidnapping
- Sexual offences
- Federal charges related to transporting a minor
Meanwhile, Victoria Cox:
- Pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated kidnapping and obstruction of justice
- Is already serving a 40-year sentence in Mississippi for related crimes
- Was expected to be sentenced in Louisiana as well
However, her sentencing hearing in the Tangipahoa Parish Courthouse has now been postponed, and a new date has not yet been announced.
Why Charges Were Reduced
Initially, Cox faced much more serious charges, including murder. However, prosecutors agreed to reduce those charges after she:
- Accepted responsibility for some of her actions
- Agreed to cooperate with authorities
- Was willing to testify against Callihan if needed
