A Michigan man charged with the murder of a police officer was removed from the courtroom after an explosive outburst directed at his attorney. Michael Lopez, 45, is accused of fatally shooting Melvindale Police Cpl. Mohamed Said during a confrontation in July 2024. Lopez’s behavior during court proceedings has led to significant disruptions, including his recent removal from the courtroom.
The Killing of Cpl. Mohamed Said
On July 21, 2024, Cpl. Mohamed Said, a 26-year-old police officer with the Melvindale Police Department, was patrolling the area when he encountered two individuals standing near a car wash. One of the individuals was Michael Lopez. As Cpl. Said approached to investigate, Lopez fled the scene on foot. The officer pursued him, and the two engaged in a physical altercation in a nearby neighborhood. During the struggle, Lopez allegedly shot and killed Officer Said. Lopez managed to flee the scene on a bicycle, prompting a large-scale search. Authorities later received a tip-off, leading them to a home in southwest Detroit where Lopez was apprehended. His capture came shortly after he was seen smiling and winking at cameras while being taken into custody.
Courtroom Outbursts and Attorney Dispute
Lopez’s trial has been marked by courtroom disruptions, particularly his contentious interactions with his attorney. During a recent appearance, Lopez grew agitated when his attorney failed to raise an objection to the admission of a video into evidence. In a moment of frustration, Lopez loudly expressed his displeasure, saying, “What else is new, man? What else is new? You ain’t gonna object? You’re not gonna help me fight, are you?” Despite a prior warning from the judge that any further outbursts would result in his removal from the courtroom, Lopez did not calm his behavior. As a result, the defendant was escorted out of the courtroom and moved to a holding cell within the court building where he would continue to follow the trial.
Lopez Attempts to Fire His Attorney
The day before his outburst in court, Lopez had reportedly expressed his desire to fire his attorney. He voiced concerns about his legal representation, stating, “I’m telling you that this guy doesn’t care about my life no more.” The defendant even went so far as to declare that his attorney was no longer his lawyer. However, the judge denied his request to dismiss his defense attorney, ruling that Lopez would remain with the appointed counsel. Lopez’s behavior and attempts to sever ties with his legal team have only added to the tension surrounding his case, as he faces serious charges for the murder of Officer Said.
