A North Carolina man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he opened fire on a car carrying his girlfriend and her friends—reportedly after a prank led him to believe she was cheating.
Alleged Prank Sparks Violent Reaction
According to an affidavit cited by authorities, Shyhied Ivey, 20, became enraged after his girlfriend and her friends staged a prank implying she was unfaithful.
On April 4 around 11:30 p.m., the woman and four friends were at Camp North End in Charlotte before heading to the 2700 block of Columbus Circle. While there, the woman and a male friend allegedly decided to trick Ivey by having the friend call him and pretend they were together.
Suspect Allegedly Follows and Fires Shots
Police say Ivey, who had access to his girlfriend’s location, began following the group as they drove away. Authorities allege he tailgated their vehicle, drove recklessly, and called his girlfriend in an angry state, attempting to get them to pull over.
During the पीछा, the woman reported seeing Ivey fire what appeared to be a handgun into the air.
Shortly afterward, while both vehicles were stopped at an intersection on Berryhill Road, Ivey allegedly pulled alongside their red Nissan Altima and fired three shots into the car before fleeing the scene.
Evidence Captured and No Injuries Reported
Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department later met with the group and reviewed traffic camera footage.
Authorities said the footage showed the suspect’s black Nissan sedan pulling next to the victims’ vehicle, followed by “three bright bursts” consistent with gunfire that shattered the car’s windows.
Despite the gunfire, police said no injuries were reported.
Charges and Court Appearance
Ivey has been charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle, domestic violence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
He was booked into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court on April 23.
Investigators also noted that Ivey has a prior felony conviction, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm.
