A routine eviction enforcement in California’s Central Valley turned deadly on April 9, leaving a sheriff’s deputy and an armed suspect dead after a prolonged and intense confrontation with law enforcement.
Eviction Call Turns Violent
Deputies from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a home in Porterville around 10:20 a.m. to serve an eviction notice to 59-year-old David Morales. Authorities said Morales had not paid rent for more than a month and was expecting law enforcement to arrive.
According to Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, Morales opened fire immediately upon deputies’ arrival, striking Deputy Randy Hoppert, 35.
Deputy Succumbs to Injuries
Hoppert was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries. Officials described him as a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and a former Navy corpsman who served between 2010 and 2015.
Authorities considered airlifting him to a trauma center in Fresno, approximately 70 miles away, but his condition was too unstable for transport.
Suspect Flees and Continues Gunfire
Following the initial shooting, Morales—reportedly dressed in camouflage and armed with a long rifle—escaped through a window and hid in nearby brush. He continued exchanging gunfire with deputies for several hours while evading capture.
Law enforcement agencies, including SWAT teams, crisis negotiators, and the California Highway Patrol, responded to the scene. As a precaution, residents in a four-block radius were evacuated.
Armored Vehicle Used to End Standoff
The standoff came to a dramatic end around 6 p.m. when a BearCat armored vehicle from a neighboring county was deployed. Authorities said Morales was still actively firing at officers when deputies used the vehicle to run him over, killing him.
Sheriff Boudreaux later confirmed the action was intentional, stating that deputies acted decisively in response to the ongoing threat.
Background and Investigation
Officials reported that Morales had no prior criminal history, though he legally owned 18 registered handguns. The rifle used in the attack, however, was unregistered.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and the incident is under investigation.
Community in Mourning
In the aftermath, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Deputy Hoppert. His family, including his wife and mother, has been notified.
“We are shocked and deeply saddened by today’s tragic events,” the department said in a statement, asking the community to keep the deputy’s loved ones in their thoughts.
