A boil water advisory has been issued for thousands of residents in Berkeley County following a major water line break that disrupted service across several communities.
Water Line Break Prompts Advisory
Officials say approximately 4,200 customers are affected after a water line ruptured beneath the Tail Race Canal. The break has impacted service to areas northeast of the canal, including Bonneau, St. Stephen, Shulerville/Honey Hill, Macedonia, Cainhoy, Huger, and parts of the Nucor Steel area.
Berkeley County Water and Sanitation confirmed that utility crews are actively working to repair the damaged line. The repair process is expected to take about six hours.
Precautionary Measures for Residents
While the advisory remains in effect, residents are urged to boil water before using it for drinking or cooking. This step is being recommended as a precaution to ensure safety.
Officials clarified that a boil water advisory is issued out of caution and does not necessarily mean the water is contaminated. This differs from a boil water notice, which typically indicates confirmed issues with water quality.
Ongoing Repairs and Updates
Crews continue working to restore normal service, and customers will be notified directly using the contact information associated with their accounts.
Once repairs are completed and water quality tests confirm the system is safe, the advisory will be lifted.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and watch for further updates as the situation develops.
