The Burke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two crashes that occurred Saturday night on Highway 56 South, about a half mile south of Pine Hill Church Road, after a large tree fell across the roadway.

Details of the Incident

Authorities reported that shortly after 9:00 p.m., deputies and emergency personnel responded to crashes with injuries caused when a tree fell across both lanes, striking two vehicles.

A black Jeep Cherokee was found in the northbound lane on the north side of the tree. The 18-year-old driver from Midville, Georgia, sustained minor injuries and was transported by Burke County EMA to Piedmont Medical Center.

A blue Ford Taurus was located on the south side of the tree in the northbound lane facing south. The vehicle suffered significant damage, and emergency responders discovered the driver and two rear-seat passengers inside.

Swainsboro High School confirmed that two graduates, Nykeria Johnson and Kencerio Walker, were killed in the crash. A family member and former school employee also died.

Community Response

A candlelight vigil planned for Sunday night has been postponed due to weather conditions. The community continues to mourn the loss of the four individuals involved.
