Police report that a man was beaten to death by strangers he allowed in behind him while returning to his apartment building.

Rico Barnes, 36, has been charged with first‑degree murder in the brutal killing of Syed Hammad Hussain, 40, whose Washington, D.C., apartment was also set on fire after the attack. Hussain was ambushed, beaten, bound, and killed inside his building on the 1400 block of Rhode Island Avenue NW, less than a mile from the White House, in the early hours of February 11, 2026.

How the attack unfolded

Police say Hussain had gone out late at night to get food and was returning to his loft‑style first‑floor condo around 1:30 a.m. when he heard a knock at the door and let two men inside, likely assuming they were other residents. Authorities say the suspects did not appear to know him personally and seem to have targeted him opportunistically as he walked home.

Once inside, Barnes and the second suspect tied Hussain’s wrists and ankles with neckties, beat him, and stole valuables including an electric bicycle, jewelry, watches, an El Salvadoran passport, and foreign currency totaling up to about $50,000, according to the arrest affidavit. Surveillance later showed the men carrying multiple bags, clothing, and the bike, and Barnes wearing a black leather jacket and a winter coat he did not have when he entered.

Fire and cause of death

A 911 call came in around 3:30 a.m. about smoke detection. First responders found the apartment unlocked and ablaze, extinguished the fire, and discovered Hussain’s body lying on the floor, unconscious and unresponsive, with blood on the floor and a nearby wall. He was bound at the wrists and ankles, with two 25‑pound metal dumbbells nearby.

An autopsy concluded that Hussain died from blunt‑force trauma and ligature strangulation; the thermal (burn) injuries occurred after death. Police tied the attack to a witness who was with the two suspects just before the incident and used that testimony along with surveillance and physical evidence to build the case against Barnes.

Charges and next steps

Barnes was arrested, jailed, and formally charged with first‑degree murder; he made a court appearance on Tuesday and is scheduled to return on May 18, 2026. The second suspect is in custody on unrelated charges, but no charges connecting him directly to Hussain’s killing have been filed yet. Metro Police Interim Chief Jeff Carroll stressed that the suspects exploited the victim’s trust by approaching him in a shared apartment‑building setting, calling the whole episode a “horrific, senseless act.”
