Christopher Blevins was sentenced to 17 years in prison for strangling his girlfriend, Laura Hughes, and dumping her body in an abandoned refrigerator in New Jersey’s Belleplain State Forest.
Case Details
A 46-year-old New Jersey man, Christopher Blevins, killed 50-year-old Laura Hughes, a mother of two, by strangulation before placing her body—wrapped in a sleeping bag—inside a secured refrigerator and abandoning it in Cape May County’s Belleplain State Forest. The remains were found on December 22, 2024, covered with a rug.
Investigation and Flight
License plate readers captured Blevins’ pickup truck hauling what appeared to be a refrigerator near the murder time. He fled to Mexico post-killing, returned to the U.S., and was arrested in California. In October 2025, he pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter.
Sentencing Highlights
On March 6, 2026, Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay praised the New Jersey State Police and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office for their work. Victim’s partner Cornel Alston addressed the court, stating the trauma would burden their children forever and demanding Blevins never walk free. Blevins apologized via his attorney, claiming it was unintended.
