Jayden Ryan Wallace, an 18-year-old from Gainesville, Georgia, faces first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving charges after a fatal prank at teacher Jason Hughes’ home turned deadly.
Incident Overview
Five teens arrived around 11:30-11:40 p.m. Friday at the 4400 block of North Gate Drive to “TP” or toilet-paper trees as a prank; Hughes, 40, confronted them outside. As they fled in two vehicles, Hughes tripped into the road, and Wallace allegedly ran him over with his pickup truck; the group stopped to aid him before paramedics rushed him to a hospital, where he died.
Charges Against Teens
Wallace also faces criminal trespass and littering alongside his felony homicide charge and remains jailed without bond. The other four 18-year-olds—Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz—were charged with misdemeanors for criminal trespass and littering on private property.
Victim’s Legacy
Hughes, a beloved North Hall High School math teacher, coach, husband, and father of two young boys, prompted community mourning with the school opening Saturday for grief support and a GoFundMe raising over $100,000. Former student Shayden Maynor praised his supportiveness, while the district highlighted his passion as a mentor; it’s unclear if the teens knew him or why they targeted the home.
