You know exactly what it is: A man killed his blind girlfriend in a motel and spent days living with her body in his room.

Daniel J. Varnes, 47, from Michigan, pleaded no contest to second-degree murder, torture, and concealing a death in the killing of his visually impaired girlfriend, Teressa M. Johnson. He reached a deal for a 32-year prison sentence for locking her in a Saginaw motel room, abusing her for over a week, and staying with her body for days after her death. Johnson’s mutilated body was found on September 1, 2024, at the Rodeway Inn and Suites.

Abuse and Discovery

Varnes admitted to detectives he beat Johnson repeatedly with fists, boots, and objects, used needle-nose pliers on her mouth to silence her, and struck her at least 10 times. An autopsy confirmed her death from multiple traumatic injuries, both recent and older, with complications. A drug dealer discovered the body under a blanket after Varnes stole crack and invited him over; Varnes casually revealed it, suggesting easy disposal since no one knew she was there.

Investigation Details

Police recovered bloodied tools in the room including scissors, pliers, a ratchet, side cutters, and screwdrivers. Varnes fled into nearby woods after the dealer called 911 but was caught later that day. A neighboring motel guest staying next door for months noticed nothing unusual despite daily interactions. Varnes faces formal sentencing on April 13.
