Five teens are now facing multiple felony charges in connection with the death of an Oregon minister who was shot while protecting his grandson. Authorities said Kevin Cooper, 56, died on Dec. 12, 2025, more than a month after he was shot multiple times during a home invasion in the 9300 block of Southeast Ramona Street in Portland on Nov. 1, 2025.
Details of the Home Invasion and Investigation
According to a Portland Police Bureau press release on Feb. 24, 2026, detectives with the Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) have been pursuing leads, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and conducting other investigative work. They determined that five suspects invaded Cooper’s home and shot him in front of his family members. Cooper’s brother told KOIN 6 that the suspects pretended to be police before breaking down the door. Kevin, a minister at People of Purpose Family Worship Center, was protecting his 4-year-old grandson when he was shot.
Charges and Public Response
The suspects, Zyaire Carter and Ty’Davion C. Burton, are facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, assault, burglary, and recklessly endangering another person. Jayden J. Sarinana, Jordan Perkins, and a juvenile male face charges, including second-degree murder, assault, and burglary. Chief Bob Day of the Portland Police Bureau expressed hope that the arrests would help the family begin healing. Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer emphasized the need to address youth violence and deliver justice for Cooper’s family.
