Ruth Miller and her husband Marcus Miller planned a family trip in August 2024 to celebrate Ruth’s 40th birthday, choosing Atwood Lake over a visit to Columbus. What began as a lakeside getaway for the couple and their four children ended in tragedy. The morning after her birthday, Ruth told authorities she had placed their 4-year-old son, Vincen, into the reservoir as an act of faith, saying she had “given” him to God. She also claimed her husband was safe in the belly of a fish. By the next morning, both Marcus and Vincen had been recovered from the water.
Allegations of Spiritual Delusion and Criminal Charges
Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvil Campbell later described Ruth’s actions as stemming from a “spiritual delusion.” Authorities allege she also drove a golf cart carrying her three older children into the water during the ordeal. She now faces charges of assault and murder and has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Prosecutor Ryan Styer told the court the case is not about who committed the acts, but why. Her defense attorney, Ian Friedman, has acknowledged that she caused the deaths but argues the central issue is her mental state at the time. A judge has ruled her competent to stand trial in Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court.
Faith, Mental Health, and Community Impact
Friends and neighbors in Winesburg described the Millers as a loving and devoted family within one of North America’s largest Amish communities. In the months before the tragedy, Ruth had reportedly become fixated on biblical themes involving the number 40 and apocalyptic beliefs. According to Sheriff Campbell, family members encouraged her to seek professional counseling. Psychologist James A. Cates noted that delusions involving divine commands can occur across religious traditions and are not reflective of Amish doctrine. The family’s Old Order Amish church stated that the events were the result of mental illness and did not represent their teachings. While community members have expressed forgiveness, they acknowledge that the legal process will determine the consequences Ruth now faces.
