Xavier Mayfield, an 18-year-old safety for South Oak Cliff High School’s football team, faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly shooting his teammate in the neck.​
Incident Details
The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. on December 20, 2025, at a residence in the 6400 block of Knoll Ridge Drive in Dallas, shortly after the team’s state championship victory. Mayfield reportedly held an AR-15-style rifle while in a bathroom; the victim called his name, and as he turned, a single shot discharged, striking the victim in the neck. The victim, another teammate whose identity remains undisclosed, was hospitalized in stable condition.​
Mayfield’s Account
Mayfield told police he was preparing for bed when the gun went off accidentally as he turned toward the victim. He attempted to drive the victim to the hospital but called 911 after noticing heavy bleeding. A witness in the bedroom saw Mayfield swinging the rifle, heard him claim the safety was on, and then heard the gunshot while leaving the room.​
Legal Status
Mayfield was arrested at the scene and is held in Dallas County Jail on a $50,000 bond. The Next Generation Action Network described the incident as accidental in a statement. No updates on the victim’s condition or further charges have been released as of December 23, 2025.​
