Over the weekend of December 6, 2025, at least 12 people were killed in a mass shooting at an illegal bar, or “shebeen,” located in a hostel in Saulsville, South Africa. Three gunmen opened fire randomly around 4:30 a.m. local time.
Among the victims were three minors: a 3-year-old boy (the child of the bar owner), a 12-year-old boy (also related to the owner), and a 16-year-old girl. Ten people died on the scene, with two more succumbing to injuries in the hospital. Additionally, 25 others sustained injuries.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) are actively searching for the three suspects involved. Authorities were informed about the shooting at 6:15 a.m., and the motive remains unknown.
SAPS highlighted challenges posed by unlicensed liquor establishments, where such violent incidents frequently occur. Between April and September, roughly 12,000 illicit bars have been shut down locally. The Tshwane Metro Police Department is aiding the investigation.
If needed, further details on the local law enforcement response to illegal bars or prevention efforts in the region can be shared.
