A 15-year-old boy from Florida is accused of shooting a bicyclist in the head after he and his companions smoked marijuana in a parked van.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is currently holding Tommy Lagree Jr. on accusations of second-degree murder and minor possession of a handgun.
While the accusations were only filed this week, investigators say the teenager turned himself in to law enforcement shortly after the incident in September.
According to the sheriff’s office, Lagree and at least two other people were inside a parked van in Orlando’s 4900 block of Keith Place at 6 p.m. on September 26.
The pals were smoking marijuana when Lagree showed them a Taurus 9mm handgun he kept in his waistband, according to an arrest affidavit seen by Law&Crime.
Authorities said that when 17-year-old Jahriel Huertas arrived at the scene, Lagree shot him in the head. According to police, everyone in the van then fled.
Deputies were dispatched to the location and saw Huertas “lying on the roadway on top of a bicycle suffering from a gunshot wound to the head,” according to the affidavit.
The victim was brought to a neighboring hospital and pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported seeing several people fleeing the van, and a law enforcement helicopter tracked down the apartment where at least two of them went following the shooting. Deputies responded and eventually detained the individuals.
According to the charging document, Lagree “arrived with his attorney, who advised deputies that Lagree had shot someone and was turning himself in,” shortly after the incident. A handgun was also seized.
Deputies said two people who were with Lagree prior to the incident identified him as the shooter.
It is unclear what detectives believe his motive was.
Lagree was charged as an adult. He is due in court on December.
