Woman ended her relationship when her ex choked her. When her parents attempted to help her move out, he shot them.

A year after fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend’s mother and wounding her father, an Iowa man was sentenced to life in prison.

Hamza Smajlovic was sentenced on Friday, Nov. 21, after pleading guilty in October to murder and attempted murder charges, according to Polk County prosecutors.

Prosecutors claimed that in October 2024, Smajlovic choked his ex, Jasmyn Robison, at their Des Moines home, prompting her to end the relationship.

According to prosecutors, Robison stated that it was the “final straw” during a “dreadful nine years.”
On November 1, 2024, Smajlovic shot Robison’s parents, Tony and Ruth Robison, who had come to help their daughter move out of the house.

Ruth was slain, and Tony was badly injured.

“I grabbed the 9-millimeter and shot Ruth in the head,” Smajlovic told a judge, according to prosecutors. “I believe after Ruth, I pointed the gun at Tony, and I shot him in the head as well.”

Prosecutors claim Jasmyn spoke at Smajlovic’s sentencing hearing.

“I wish I had never met you,” she told the defendant. “I will never get the time back with my mother.”

Jasmyn’s sister, Chayse Robison, also spoke at the hearing.

“Her memory is stronger than the man that killed her will ever be,” she told me. “His acts will bring shame to him and his family name, whereas my mother, Ruth Robison, will leave an honorable legacy. She devoted her life for Jasmyne without hesitation.”
