A woman was set on fire aboard a train in Chicago, and police have detained a person of interest.

The attack occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, while the 26-year-old woman was traveling a CTA Blue Line train near the Clark and Lake station in Chicago’s Loop district, according to NBC 5 Chicago, ABC News, and CBS affiliate WYMT.

According to police, a verbal argument between the woman and a 45-year-old male escalated when the man poured flammable liquid on her and then set her on fire, ABC News reported.

When the train arrived at the station, the man fled, leaving the woman down on the platform, according to NBC 5, quoting police.

A witness told NBC 5 about the attack, adding the victim “looked like she was in an awful lot of pain.”

According to NBC 5, the woman sustained “severe burns” all over her body and is currently in critical condition at a hospital. According to the site, firefighters responded to the location and doused the flames before authorities arrived.

Police confirmed on Tuesday, November 18, that they had arrested a person of interest, but that the investigation is still ongoing, according to ABC News and NBC 5.
