A horrific shooting occurred in New Jersey this weekend, killing two individuals.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, a 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman were killed in the 300 block of Chancellor Avenue in Newark, New Jersey, around 7:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, November 15.
Authorities reported that the two victims were pronounced dead at the neighboring University Hospital.
Three people were injured in the shooting: an 11-year-old kid, a 19-year-old man, and a 60-year-old man, according to authorities.
The three injured people are in stable condition, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The Essex County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
On Sunday, Nov. 16, people contacted the Essex County Sheriff’s Office for more information, but did not receive an immediate response.
According to NJ.com, the incident occurred in a residential area with many single-family houses.
According to the publication, residents of an apartment building on neighboring Leslie Street were not permitted to return home following the incident.
One resident recounted hearing “a lot of screaming” and more than six gunshots.
Mayor Ras Baraka issued a message on Instagram, calling the incident “a dark and devastating day in Newark.” (He was referring to the shooting and another event that day in which a 2-year-old died after falling from a 20th-floor window.)
“We will not rest until justice is served for the parents and relatives who have endured unfathomable anguish and grief. “Newark will collaborate tirelessly with the prosecutor’s office, state law enforcement, and federal agencies to ensure justice is served,” he wrote.
“We urge the killer to turn himself in, as there is no safe place to hide,” Baraka said.
“Our thoughts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this tragedy. “Our prayers are with them, and our actions will support them,” the mayor said.
