New information has been released in a case involving a Colorado man who said he “accidentally” shot his wife in the chest while “clearing his gun” and then “attempted CPR for about an hour” before calling 911.
According to Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office records, David O’Grady, 37, is charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of domestic violence, as previously reported by Law & Crime.
The event took place on the morning of September 7 at the couple’s home on Shawnee Way in Aurora. The defendant’s wife, Taylor Dawn Last, 29, was killed in the incident.
O’Grady stated that due to his CPR attempts, he delayed around an hour before calling for help after his initial arrest. Authorities believe he waited many hours to make that phone call.
But that is not all.
According to the initial charging complaint, O’Grady informed the dispatcher that he was “clearing his gun last night, but accidentally discharged his firearm and hit his wife in the chest.”
While dispatchers heard the hour-long version of the story, O’Grady allegedly informed responding sheriff’s deputies that his wife had died several hours before they arrived at roughly 7:45 a.m., according to court documents acquired by The Denver Post.
According to the original affidavit acquired by Law&Crime, the couple’s two children, a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old, were sleeping in the residence when the incident occurred. O’Grady’s mother was in attendance as well.
The defendant allowed deputies into the home, where they discovered Last “lying on her back on the ground, with her left arm on her chest,” according to the affidavit. According to the paper, the victim’s body was “cold and stiff to the touch, indicating that Taylor had been dead for a while.”
In his first interview, O’Grady supposedly stated that he and Last had been haggling about some sort of party. “David said he knew the gun was loaded, fired a round into the bed, and then, as Taylor was coming into the room, aimed it in Taylor’s direction and pulled the trigger,” according to the affidavit.
The bullet struck Last in the chest, killing him, according to officials.
As the shot rang out, the other residents took notice.
According to police authorities, the couple’s children slept in a common bedroom upstairs, across a “narrow hallway” from their parents’. The youngsters allegedly told authorities that they heard “loud arguing” and a “bang” that caused them to “jump” out of bed, according to the affidavit.
According to the affidavit, the children also said that they saw O’Grady “throw something” at Last before falling “onto the bed with her hands up in the air.” According to authorities, the couple’s children reportedly reported seeing “broken colorful things” on the ground immediately after the incident. However, “none” of the alleged objects were visible when police enforcement arrived.
Last’s aunt describes her niece’s murder on a GoFundMe page as “an unimaginable tragedy” and a “tragic act of domestic violence” that has left her two children without their mother and father.
“She was a loving mother to her two beautiful little girls,” the web campaign states. “The unthinkable happened: their father was responsible for her death and is now incarcerated. This leaves these precious girls without both of their parents.”
