A mother and her 9-year-old boy were allegedly threatened outside a Florida hotel last week by a man holding a “long brown knife” who said the woman, “I am going to cut your throat and your son’s throat,” according to authorities.
“Somebody is trying to kill us!” the youngster exclaimed as he ran into the lobby of the Barlington Hotel in Miami, where his mother’s husband was staying, after being threatened by Jorge Felix Larrea Diaz, according to an arrest affidavit acquired by Law&Crime on Monday.
Larrea Diaz, 38, was allegedly looking for the spouse when he approached the mother and kid at 4:20 p.m. on Friday, wearing a backpack and uttering menacing things to them in Spanish. Police translated his Spanish statements into the document.
“Where is your husband?” Larrea Diaz inquired after withdrawing his knife, according to the police document. “[The husband] exited the lobby and saw the defendant holding the knife in his right hand,” according to the confession. “The defendant then shouted he was going to kill [the husband].”
Police said the spouse “picked up a small bicycle in self-defense” after Larrea Diaz entered the lobby looking for him, prompting him to depart the scene. Cops describe him as a visitor at the motel, where the family also stayed.
According to the affidavit, surveillance video shows Larrea Diaz carrying an item in his hand while threatening the mother and son. The knife was never found, but police arrested Larrea Diaz and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was arrested after the victims identified him to police.
“[Larrea Diaz] had changed clothing,” according to the affidavit.
It’s unknown why Larrea Diaz went hunting for the husband on Friday. The Barlington Hotel did not respond to a request for comment from Law&Crime on Monday.
