Cigar Factory unveils National Historic Landmark plaque

Charleston, South Carolina – Officials gathered Wednesday to commemorate a historical monument on the peninsula.

The Cigar Factory on East Bay Street had a special celebration that included the unveiling of a plaque.

Officials stated that the celebration acknowledged the site’s vital role in southern labor activity and the Civil Rights movement.

In the 1940s, Cigar Factory workers, headed by Black women, went on strike for better pay and working conditions, as well as to protest gender and racial discrimination on the job.

Last December, the United States Department of the Interior designated the building as a National Historic Landmark, the highest level of federal protection for a historically significant structure.
