A Shelby police officer has been terminated following a violent arrest captured on a Ring doorbell camera. The footage shows the officer repeatedly striking Cherrie Moore, prompting public outrage and a formal investigation.
Details of the Incident
The arrest occurred after Moore allegedly attempted to flee during an arrest for misdemeanor breaking or entering. Charges against Moore also included resisting a public officer and assaulting a government official. She has since posted bond.
The officer involved has been identified as Karson Hyder. Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser described the incident as “disturbing and unacceptable” and confirmed Hyder’s termination on Saturday.
Background and History
Court records indicate Moore and Hyder have a prior history. Last year, Moore pleaded guilty to resisting an officer in a separate case that also involved Hyder. During the most recent encounter, court documents state Moore was “grabbing and ripping” the officer’s uniform.
Community Response
Neighbors and Moore’s family have voiced concerns over the officer’s actions. Moore’s father, Gregory Moore, noted she had not been taking her medication at the time of the arrest. Local resident Teharon Laborn said, “Beating a woman? You beat a woman. Think about if that would’ve been your child.”
Independent Investigation
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has launched a probe into the allegations of excessive force. SBI Director Chip Hawley emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating that findings will be submitted to prosecutors once complete.
Authorities have not released additional details while the investigation remains active. Attempts to contact Hyder for comment were unsuccessful.
