South Carolina cops say a driver was killed when his vehicle crashed into a utility pole

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said that a tractor trailer crashed on a Midlands route late Saturday night, killing one person.

Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said that the single-vehicle crash occurred around 10:50 p.m. in Lee County.

Bolt reported seeing a 2025 Volvo tractor trailer going south on S.C. 341 in the Bishopville area. The big truck drove off the right side of S.C. 341 at the Longbranch Road intersection, colliding with a utility pole, according to Bolt.

According to Bolt, the only person in the tractor trailer was the driver, who died.

The Lee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no information on whether the driver was wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the tractor trailer’s deviation off the road was unknown, but the Highway Patrol is still investigating the collision.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, at least 717 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2025 as of October 19. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, at least 948 persons were killed in collisions last year.
