Summerville Public Transport Changes Effective Next Week

Starting Monday, October 13, 2025, Summerville will see changes in its public transportation services as part of regional transit updates. Key highlights include:

Service Changes Effective October 13, 2025

Expansion of KRTplus, an on-demand ride service, will begin serving new zones including parts of East Charleston and nearby areas, improving flexible transit options.

Some fixed bus routes, such as Route 13 Beech Avenue and Route 15 South Hills, will transition to KRTplus service, enhancing cost efficiency and coverage.

New free transfer policies using account-based ticketing are introduced, allowing riders who transfer from KRTplus to fixed routes within an hour to ride the bus for free, incentivizing multimodal use.

Schedule adjustments reflect traffic changes and aim to improve connections, especially for school routes and peak travel times.

Ongoing Planning and Community Input

Summerville and the broader Lowcountry area are part of the extensive Lowcountry Rapid Transit Line project, which will eventually connect Summerville to downtown Charleston with dedicated transit infrastructure, expected to be under construction within a few years.

Dorchester County, which covers Summerville, is also in the process of infrastructure improvements including road widening and intersection upgrades to ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety.

These changes focus on increasing flexibility, improving connections, and preparing the transit network for future growth and demand in Summerville and surrounding communities.
