The Greenville Mayor has announced several major infrastructure projects planned for 2025 that focus on improving traffic safety, pedestrian access, and neighborhood connectivity.
Key Highlights of Greenville’s Infrastructure Plan
Augusta Street and Vardry Street Intersection Improvement: This project addresses a severe grade issue caused by railroad tracks. Designs to improve street grade and pedestrian crossings are underway, with construction expected in spring 2025.
Pendleton Street Road Diet: Pendleton Street between South Main and Academy Streets will be reduced to two lanes, with protected bike lanes on both sides. The intersection at Pendleton and Vardy will be realigned, and pedestrian safety will be enhanced. A traffic signal with pedestrian and bicycle lanes will also be added at Pendleton and Textile Street. Construction is expected to start in spring 2025.
South Main Street Resurfacing: From River Street to Augusta Street near Fluor Field and The Green apartment complex, South Main Street will be resurfaced with added crosswalks for better pedestrian safety. The project is planned for summer 2025.
Dunbar Street and Green Avenue Safety Audit: Traffic calming and pedestrian improvements are being planned based on safety audits, with short-term fixes implemented in spring 2025 and design for longer-term improvements continuing through fall and winter.
Dunbar Connector Project: This east-west connection from Dunbar Street to the County Square redevelopment is advancing with property acquisition approved. It will enhance transportation options once completed.
Grove Road Resurfacing and Multi-Modal Improvements: This project includes resurfacing and a “road diet” with multi-modal transportation facilities, resuming after delays caused by infrastructure repairs and weather.
Bridge Projects
Queen Street Bridge Replacement: The city is progressing toward replacing this critical link between Southernside and West Greenville, with conceptual designs expected in early 2025.
Willard Street Bridge Replacement: Construction on this replacement bridge near Unity Park is set for early 2025, incorporating safety enhancements for the adjacent Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail.
Additional Initiatives
Public meeting opportunities are scheduled to engage residents in the design phases.
Projects are funded through local gasoline taxes, city capital funds, and county sales tax programs despite some recent challenges with funding referendums.
These projects together reflect Greenville’s commitment to safer, more accessible, and aesthetically enhanced transportation corridors throughout the city in 2025.
