Sumter’s mayor has announced several key infrastructure projects in 2025 aimed at improving public safety, transportation, and flood mitigation:
- The Miller to Morgan Avenue Stormwater Improvements project is nearing completion, replacing over 2,700 feet of aging underground stormwater infrastructure to reduce frequent flooding in the area between Jackson Street, Broad Street, Miller Road, and Morgan Avenue. This project, funded by a $3.13 million grant from the South Carolina Office of Resilience and a $250,000 local share, addresses safety concerns, protects properties, and improves emergency response during heavy rain events.
- The North Main Corridor Improvement Project – Phase 2 is underway near Morris College, involving $1.3 million in improvements including new sidewalks, curbs, driveway entrances, road resurfacing, decorative lighting, updated signage, landscaping, and a signature archway to revitalize the neighborhood and enhance pedestrian safety.
- Multiple corridor retrofit projects and bridge replacements are in progress, including key bridge replacements over Turkey Creek, Shot Pouch Creek, and along major thoroughfares to reduce structurally deficient infrastructure risks.
- The city and local partners are also working on transportation and transit improvements through the Sumter Area Transportation Study (SUATS) to increase public transit funding, add bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and implement traffic calming measures.
These efforts collectively reflect City of Sumter’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure resilience, public safety, and economic growth in 2025.
