Driver died as automobile drives off Lexington County road and crashes, South Carolina police say

The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that one person was killed late Saturday night when a car ran off a Lexington County road and crashed.

Cpl. Nick Pye said the single-vehicle collision occurred around 11:30 p.m.

Pye said he saw a 2001 Ford sedan driving west on Old Orangeburg Road. Pye reported that the Ford ran off the right side of the road and into a ditch near the intersection with Chestnut Street.

The driver died, according to Pye.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

No additional injuries were reported.

There was no word on whether the driver was wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the Ford’s veer off the road was unknown, but the Highway Patrol is still investigating the wreck.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, at least 637 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2025 as of September 21. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, at least 948 people were killed in crashes last year.

DPS data show that at least 27 people died in Lexington County crashes in 2025. DPS reported 50 deaths in the county in 2024.
