Jarrel Smith, 33, was found guilty by a jury in Iberville Parish in April of this year on one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The conviction came after a quick deliberation, with jurors returning their verdict in just four minutes and 44 seconds, according to a courtroom report by the Plaquemine Post South. The remarkably brief time it took the jury to reach a decision has caught the attention of many, with local officials praising the quick and decisive action.
On May 2, 2026, Smith was sentenced to 20 years in state prison by 18th Judicial District Judge Elizabeth Engolio. This sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime, as Smith was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his previous felony conviction for simple burglary in 2019.
Law Enforcement and Prosecutors React
District Attorney Tony Clayton expressed satisfaction with the verdict, emphasizing the importance of prosecuting violent offenders and removing illegal firearms from the streets. He remarked that the speed with which the jury returned its verdict should serve as a strong message that authorities are committed to taking swift action against gun-related offenses.
“I have repeatedly said we will prosecute violent offenders,” Clayton said. “In this case, a convicted felon had a firearm in his possession and had a known criminal history. Getting a verdict in less than five minutes should send a message — we are working to get the guns off the streets, and we will take these cases to trial, if necessary.”
The Arrest and Investigation
Smith’s arrest occurred on September 8, 2024, when he was detained after deputies noticed a strong smell of marijuana smoke emanating from his car while patrolling an apartment complex. Upon his detention, authorities discovered that Smith was carrying a gun, a violation given his criminal history. Smith had been convicted of simple burglary in 2019, which legally barred him from possessing a firearm.
The case, which had taken some time to reach trial, ultimately saw a swift resolution. Prosecutors were able to present a strong case, leading to the jury’s quick decision.
