Oroville, CA – A 28-year-old California man, Nathan James Sumpter, has been sentenced to two years and eight months in state prison after he violently attacked the mother of his child just moments after hiding from police in her home. The incident, which took place on the evening of July 8, was described by authorities as a disturbing example of domestic violence behind closed doors.

Violated Restraining Order, Then Attacked

According to the Butte County District Attorney’s Office, Sumpter violated an existing restraining order by entering the victim’s home in Oroville. When law enforcement visited the residence that evening, Sumpter hid inside the home and threatened the victim and her family if they reported him.

Once police left, Sumpter punched the woman in the face and strangled her, launching what the DA described as a continued pattern of brutality.

Assault Continued the Next Morning

On the following morning, Sumpter escalated the violence by strangling the victim until she lost consciousness and stomping on her face — all in front of their two-year-old child.

He reportedly panicked after realizing the woman was unresponsive and called her aunt for help before fleeing the scene. The victim was later transported to a local hospital, where she received treatment for a fractured eye socket and other injuries.

Arrest, Charges, and Sentencing

Sumpter was later arrested by Oroville Police and charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors, including:

Assault likely to produce great bodily injury

Battery causing serious bodily harm

Dissuading a witness

He pleaded no contest and was sentenced on Thursday, September 11, to two years and eight months in prison.

DA: A Reminder of Hidden Domestic Violence

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the case highlights “the insidious nature of domestic violence, which so often happens out of sight, behind closed doors.”

“This wasn’t a single moment of rage — it was a vicious, sustained attack,” Ramsey noted in the official statement.
