A deeply disturbing case in South Carolina has led to the arrest of a care worker accused of neglecting a vulnerable patient, resulting in death. Authorities say the incident raises serious concerns about the treatment and safety of individuals in care facilities.
Care worker arrested in Florence
The case took place in Florence, where 22-year-old Haven Alyssa Jackson has been arrested.
According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, she is facing two charges:
- Abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult
- Abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult resulting in death
She is currently being held without bond at the Florence County Detention Center.
Incident at care facility
The घटना happened on February 1 at the Pee Dee Regional Center, which provides care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The facility itself reported the incident to authorities after the patient’s death, leading to an official investigation.
Allegations of neglect during emergency
Investigators say the patient choked while eating food that was not approved. According to arrest warrants, Jackson was aware of the situation but did not take action.
Authorities allege that she was seen laughing instead of helping and failed to perform any life-saving measures.
Failure to follow safety procedures
Officials also stated that Jackson did not carry out required safety checks, which were supposed to be done every 15 minutes.
Investigators claim she later falsified records to show that the checks had been completed, even though they were not.
Earlier incidents of alleged abuse
According to additional charges, Jackson is also accused of physically abusing the same patient earlier that day.
Authorities say she pushed the victim multiple times, causing them to fall. She also allegedly blocked the victim’s movement and forced them in certain directions.
Evidence gathered during investigation
Officials say the allegations are supported by:
- Surveillance footage
- Witness interviews
- Facility records
These pieces of evidence helped investigators build the case against the accused.
Case under prosecution
The case is being handled by the 12th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, which will move forward with legal proceedings.
More details may be revealed as the case progresses through court.
Concerns over care facility safety
This incident has raised serious questions about the safety of vulnerable individuals in care environments. Proper supervision, training, and accountability are essential to prevent such tragedies.
Facilities are expected to follow strict guidelines to ensure the well-being of those under their care.
