The US Coast Guard has stopped an unauthorized charter on the Wando River

The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted an illegal charter vessel on the Wando River this week. The 26-foot boat was operating as a bareboat charter, meaning it was being rented out without a captain or crew. However, the vessel lacked a valid agreement and was carrying more passengers than allowed for an uninspected passenger vessel, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston.

Safety Concerns and Regulations

A bareboat charter allows individuals to rent or lease a boat for a set period of time, but any vessel carrying more than 12 passengers must undergo a safety inspection by the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard reminded the public that illegal charters can put passengers’ safety at risk.

“If you are paying for a boat ride in Charleston — make sure it’s legal so 1) you stay safe and 2) your relaxing day on the water is not cut short,” the Coast Guard posted on its Facebook page.

Ongoing Efforts to Address Illegal Charters

Coast Guard officials said they will continue to work with maritime law enforcement to identify and shut down illegal charter operations in the area. They also encouraged anyone who suspects illegal activity to report it to the Coast Guard Investigative Service.

Reporting Tips

Anyone with information about illegal charters can submit a tip to the Coast Guard Investigative Service for further investigation.
