Berkeley County, South Carolina (WCBD) An inmate at the Hill Finklea Detention Center is facing multiple charges after a “violent attack” on a detention officer.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office reported that on June 28, a detention deputy was conducting rounds inside the jail when Divine Johnson, 19, attacked them with a homemade weapon.
According to the sheriff’s office, the weapon, known as a “shank,” was used to stab the officer, resulting in puncture wounds on his arms. The deputy was also struck repeatedly in the head and face.
The assault was recorded on the deputy’s body camera. To watch the video, click here.
“This kind of violence against our detention deputies is unacceptable,” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said. “I commend the detention deputies for responding quickly and professionally to assist the officer in need. Fortunately, the detention deputy did not sustain serious injuries. The new security features at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center after the expansion will significantly improve and ensure the safety and security of our detention deputies and inmates.”
Johnson was initially booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center on July 15, 2024, for murder and two counts of attempted murder, and he is now facing additional charges of first-degree assault and battery.
