A South Carolina man, Chavas Rhodes, 30, is behind bars after reportedly threatening to kill his children and shooting their pet dog. Rhodes faces multiple charges, including burglary, kidnapping, animal cruelty, and unlawful conduct towards a child. The incident took place early Tuesday morning in North Charleston, when Rhodes allegedly entered his children’s apartment uninvited while their mother was outside.

Incident Details and Threats

Around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Rhodes entered the apartment at the 6500 block of Dorchester Road, according to the North Charleston Police Department. One of the children said Rhodes entered through an unlocked door and shouted, “All of you are going to die tonight.” The children, terrified, ran and hid under a bed in one of the bedrooms.

The Tragic Death of the Family Dog

The family’s chihuahua-rat terrier mix named Logan started barking at Rhodes, which led him to shoot the dog dead. Rhodes then entered the bedroom, forcing two of the children to leave with him, while one child seized the chance to escape and seek help.

Intimidation and Escape Attempt

The children, covered with a blanket, were ordered to go to a closet. One of them, upon seeing their deceased pet, broke down in tears and refused to go with Rhodes. The suspect then threatened the children, warning them not to call anyone or he would hurt them.

The Mother’s Intervention

As the children were locked in the closet, one managed to call their mother for help. Upon arriving, the mother was confronted by Rhodes, who allegedly pointed a gun at her before jumping off a balcony and fleeing the scene.

Arrest and Investigation

Police later apprehended Rhodes, finding a gun he had used nearby in some bushes. Rhodes appeared intoxicated at the time of his arrest. He is currently being held without bond at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

Legal and Emotional Impact

Rhodes is facing severe charges, with the mother of the children having a domestic violence injunction against him. A victim’s advocate expressed that the children and their mother are “deathly terrified” of Rhodes. Rhodes’ actions have left a lasting emotional impact on the family, who now must cope with the trauma of the event.

In summary, this horrific incident highlights the dangers of domestic violence and the deep emotional scars it can leave on those affected. Rhodes’ actions have deeply frightened the family, leaving them in fear of further harm.
