In a developing case out of Sumter County, two additional dogs have been seized from a home where a Florence woman was viciously attacked by a dog over a week ago. The incident, initially believed to involve only one dog, is now under investigation by authorities who suspect two other dogs may have been involved in the attack.
Details of the Attack
Sumter County Chief Deputy Hampton Gardner confirmed the seizure of the dogs, noting that the initial assumption was that a Cane Corso mixed with a Pit Bull was the sole aggressor. However, after further investigation, officials believe the two additional dogs in the home may have also played a role in the attack.
The victim, a 58-year-old woman, remains in critical condition after the violent assault. The woman had been delivering a package to the home and was walking back to her car when a dog suddenly charged out of the house and attacked her.
Graphic Injuries Detailed in Incident Report
An incident report provides a harrowing account of the victim’s injuries. Descriptions from the responding deputy paint a grisly picture: “Nose was gone and also a piece of lip… had a bite that was covered already on leg. I also had a piece of skull missing.” The victim appeared to be in shock and was visibly shaken when help arrived.
Ongoing Investigation and Health Department Involvement
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is involved in the investigation. While DPH typically refrains from commenting on specific cases due to privacy concerns, they reiterated that all bites from mammals must be reported under the Rabies Control Act.
The report also mentioned that the dog’s inoculation records were up to date, which is being reviewed as part of the investigation.
Victim’s Recovery and Legal Response
The woman’s family is understandably distraught. Her daughter referred inquiries to their attorney, D. Craig Brown, who has yet to make an official statement. However, a fellow church member revealed that the victim has already undergone four surgeries and will need additional procedures as part of her long road to recovery.
Dogs Quarantined at Sumter County Animal Shelter
The dogs involved in the attack have been seized and are currently quarantined at the Sumter County Animal Shelter. Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and determine the next steps in the case.
As the investigation unfolds, the community remains deeply concerned about the incident, and authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant regarding potential risks associated with dangerous animals.
