A powerful and emotional story has come out of North Charleston, South Carolina, where a young woman is finally speaking up years after surviving a shooting. Her experience is now raising serious questions about repeat offenders and how the justice system handles such cases.
A Life-Changing Incident in 2017
Amber Steele was just a teenager when she was shot in the back on June 3, 2017. The incident happened at a McDonald’s on Ashley Phosphate Road, a place where she had simply gone to grab food.
She clearly remembers the moment:
- She was about to order food
- Heard a sudden loud gunshot
- Everything around her changed instantly
The bullet hit her back, and her car rolled forward and crashed into a fence. She says she was left alone in the vehicle after the shooting.
Today, she carries a tattoo that reads “Never a victim, always a fighter” over the spot where the bullet passed through—symbolising her strength and survival.
Accused Identified Years Later
Steele says she later recognised the shooter as Willie Nathaniel Robinson after seeing him on television for another crime.
At the time of the 2017 incident, Robinson was only charged with unlawful carrying of a firearm. According to Steele, the lack of evidence—mainly the absence of the weapon—meant stronger charges were not filed.
She felt her voice was ignored and that justice was never fully served.
Concerns Over Repeat Offences
Records show that Robinson has been arrested multiple times over the years:
- Bookings in 2019, 2020, and 2025
- Several charges related to unlawful carrying of firearms
- Released multiple times since 2013
More recently, he has been charged with serious offences, including first-degree domestic violence and kidnapping.
Police say a neighbour reported seeing him force a woman into a trailer while she was calling for help. The situation became so serious that a SWAT team had to enter the property.
Call for Stronger Action
Steele is now speaking out, not just for herself, but for others who may be at risk. She believes stricter action should be taken against repeat offenders.
Her main concerns include:
- Repeat offenders being released too easily
- Lack of strict punishment for earlier crimes
- Risk to public safety when such individuals are free
Her father, Donald Steele Jr., also shared similar concerns, saying authorities should carefully review a person’s past before releasing them.
Current Status of the Accused
Robinson is currently being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center. Authorities have set his bond at $20,000.
A Message of Strength and Awareness
Despite everything she went through, Amber Steele has shown strong courage. By sharing her story, she hopes to bring attention to gaps in the system and prevent others from going through similar experiences.
This case highlights serious concerns about how repeat offenders are handled and the long-term impact on victims. Amber Steele’s story is not just about survival—it is about speaking up after years of silence and demanding accountability. Her experience shows that justice is not only about punishment but also about preventing future harm. As authorities continue to deal with such cases, her voice serves as a reminder that stronger action and better monitoring of repeat offenders are necessary to keep communities safe.
