Demolition of the former Richland Mall in Forest Acres, South Carolina, has been completed, marking a key milestone in the long-anticipated redevelopment of the site. The nearly one-million-square-foot property has been cleared to make way for a new mixed-use development that city leaders believe will transform the area for years to come.
Next Phase of Development
Forest Acres City Administrator Shaun Greenwood confirmed that the demolition phase is officially over, and the project is moving into the site development stage. Crews will now begin preparing the ground for the foundations of the new buildings.
Plans for the Site
The redevelopment plan includes hundreds of apartments, a new Kroger grocery store, and numerous retail spaces. While detailed construction planning is still underway, officials have not yet finalized the mix of businesses. However, city leaders aim to attract a variety of options, including upscale retail, restaurants, and locally owned businesses.
Greenwood emphasized the importance of featuring locally owned shops and boutique-style businesses in the redevelopment. “That can be everything from general retail, restaurants, specialty boutiques, and things like that,” he said.
Community Input
Residents have shared their ideas for the redevelopment, with some hoping for specific stores or family-friendly options. Columbia resident Mary Pretty suggested a blouse shop, while Ronald Manigault expressed interest in having more stores and entertainment options for children.
Long-Term Vision
City officials view this redevelopment as a generational project, with long-term benefits for both residents and visitors. “What you build right now, you’re stuck with for forty years,” Greenwood said, emphasizing the significance of the development.
Timeline and Additional Features
Developers anticipate construction on the apartment portion of the project could begin as early as late summer, with the first phase of development expected to be completed by 2028. Additionally, plans include a public park with an amphitheater, with construction for that part of the project expected to begin later this year.
This redevelopment aims to revitalize the area and provide a new destination for the community to live, shop, and enjoy entertainment for years to come.
