A longtime North Charleston police captain has filed a federal lawsuit alleging age discrimination and retaliation by the city and Police Chief Ron Camacho.
Captain Files Lawsuit
Tammy Sad, 58, has worked for the North Charleston Police Department since 1991. In the lawsuit filed on May 29, she claims Chief Ron Camacho told her she would be transferred because he wanted to invest in younger officers who had more time left in their careers.
After Sad filed a human resources complaint in August, the transfer was cancelled, and she remained in her role as captain of patrol for the South Bureau.
Allegations of Retaliation
The lawsuit claims that after filing the complaint, Sad was excluded from meetings and important discussions involving her bureau.
She alleges supervisors isolated her from other commanders and made decisions affecting her division without informing her. The suit lists multiple incidents that she says undermined her authority.
HR Investigation Into Chief
The lawsuit also provides details related to an internal human resources investigation involving Chief Camacho. While city officials have previously confirmed an investigation exists, they have not publicly disclosed details about it.
EEOC Complaint
According to the lawsuit, Sad filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on May 7. The agency later granted her permission to pursue the matter in federal court.
City’s Response
North Charleston officials declined to comment on the lawsuit, citing ongoing litigation. The city has also not provided an update on the status of the internal investigation involving Camacho.
