Mount Pleasant's rezoning plan targets church and school sites

Mount Pleasant leaders are considering a rezoning proposal that would prevent church and school properties from automatically being converted into residential developments in the future.

Rezoning Proposal

The town’s planning committee has recommended rezoning church and school properties from residential classifications to Public Institutional (P-1) zoning.

Currently, some church and school sites have underlying R-1 or R-2 zoning, which allows housing developments if the properties are no longer used for their current purpose.

Why the Change Is Being Proposed

Town officials say the goal is to prevent former church or school properties from automatically becoming residential developments if they are sold or change ownership.

Council member Kathryn Whitaker said the proposal would align zoning with the current use of the properties and the town’s long-term planning goals.

Properties Affected

Officials estimate the change could affect between 30 and 40 churches, along with schools that still have residential zoning classifications.

The proposal would not impact the current operation of those properties as churches or schools.

Looking Ahead

Supporters say the change would give the town more control over future redevelopment and help preserve properties for public or institutional uses.

The planning committee has recommended approval, and the full Mount Pleasant Town Council is expected to review the proposal next week.
