A woman accused of causing a disturbance at a North Charleston liquor store in April has turned herself in to authorities. Ebony Gillespie, 33, faces multiple charges, including third-degree assault, malicious injury to property, and shoplifting.
Incident at Rivers and Reynolds Liquors
On April 18, North Charleston police responded to a disturbance call at Rivers and Reynolds Liquors. Employees reported that Gillespie began banging on the store’s door after hours. Out of concern that she might damage the property, they allowed her inside.
Once inside, Gillespie allegedly attempted to steal a bottle of tequila. Employees were able to recover the bottle, though its seal had been broken. Gillespie then reportedly tried to steal a bottle of wine, which led to a physical struggle. During the confrontation, she allegedly bit one of the employees on the arm.
The situation escalated when the wine bottle fell and shattered. Despite the chaos, employees managed to force Gillespie out of the store and secure the premises.
Further Alleged Damage
After being removed from the store, Gillespie reportedly returned a short time later. Witnesses say she grabbed an item in the parking lot and appeared to scratch the manager’s vehicle. The vehicle sustained noticeable damage, which was later reported to police.
Arrest and Booked Into Detention Center
Ebony Gillespie turned herself in to North Charleston authorities on Tuesday morning. She was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center, where she now faces charges for her actions at the liquor store.
