GLASGOW, SCOTLAND — Nicole Blain, 30, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 19 years for the murder of her 19-day-old daughter, Thea Wilson. The sentencing occurred at the High Court in Glasgow, where members of the public heckled Blain, calling her a “monster.”
Details of the
On July 14, 2023, emergency services were called to a home in Greenock after Thea became unwell. She was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, where she later died. A post-mortem revealed multiple skull fractures, broken ribs, brain damage, and bleeding behind her eyes. A pathologist testified that the injuries were consistent with violent shaking and impact with a hard surface
Trial and Conviction
Blain had claimed that another child in the household caused Thea’s injuries, asserting she found the newborn on the floor after a nap. Prosecutors argued the explanation was “just nonsense,” and the jury ultimately found Blain guilty of murder.
Judge Lord Scott described Blain’s account as “patently absurd” and a “feeble attempt to evade responsibility.” He stated, “Rather than love, protect and nurture her, what Thea received from you was catastrophic deadly violence.”
Victim Impact
The baby’s father, Ross Wilson, read a victim impact statement describing the profound grief and loss caused by Thea’s death. “The emptiness I felt walking away from her … since that moment I cannot sleep, eat or take part in any form of physical exercise. The pain is constant — it does not ease, it does not fade,” he said.
Sentencing and Public Reaction
Blain was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 19 years. As she was led away, members of the public shouted “monster.” Supporters of Thea gathered outside the courthouse for a balloon release, chanting “Justice for Thea.”
Blain’s attorney has indicated that an appeal of both the conviction and sentence has already been lodged.
Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young stated, “This is a tragic case in which a baby has lost her life and Nicole Blain will now have to face the consequences of her actions.”
