A Lake Marion dinner turned tragic when a rogue umbrella killed a woman

A lakeside dining outing in Summerton turned fatal when a patio umbrella struck a woman, officials say.

Incident Details

On Saturday evening, 56-year-old Dana Weinger of Huger was dining at Driftwood Grill on Lake Marion when a sudden strong wind, described as a “microburst,” tore a patio umbrella loose. The umbrella hit her head and neck, severing her carotid artery. First responders performed CPR, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation

Clarendon County authorities are treating the death as accidental and reviewing weather data from the time of the incident. An autopsy was scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Safety Advisory

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that unsecured umbrellas can become deadly, causing lacerations, impalements, and deaths. New voluntary standards, including ASTM F3681-24, provide guidance on anchors and safer designs.

Community Response

Driftwood Grill offered condolences, grief counseling, and support resources to staff and patrons. Officials asked for privacy for the family while the investigation continues.
