A man has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a woman at a vape shop in north Charlotte. The incident took place at the Arbor Smoke Shop on East Arbors Drive on Wednesday, around 10:30 a.m.
The victim told investigators that Yasir Khater, an individual associated with the shop, repeatedly asked for her phone number before forcibly dragging her to the back of the store, where he then raped her, according to a police affidavit.
Shock and Disturbance Among Customers
The news of the alleged assault has left many customers shocked and disturbed. One customer, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed her concern after hearing about the incident, saying it made her hesitant to return to the store, even though she frequented the area.
Another local, Emily, reflected on the situation, asking how the community could better help others in similar situations, particularly if people are heard screaming for help.
Store Owner’s Statement
The store’s owner, Musab Mohammed, spoke to the media, saying he was out of state when the incident occurred. He clarified that Khater was not an official employee of the shop, but rather a friend who was performing handyman work for the store at the time.
Mohammed expressed concern over how the incident might affect his business, distancing himself from the crime.
Investigation and Arrest
Police spoke with Khater, 44, who gave conflicting statements about the incident. He denied having sexual intercourse with the victim. The police gathered DNA samples and other evidence from the scene, which were sent for analysis.
Khater was arrested and charged with second-degree forcible rape and first-degree kidnapping. He is currently being held without bond at the Mecklenburg County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 28, 2026.
