A tragic case in Minnesota has taken a serious legal turn after a couple’s charges were upgraded in connection with the death of their 10-year-old daughter. The incident has raised major concerns about child safety, care practices, and neglect, especially involving children with special needs.
Charges upgraded to second-degree murder
The case is being handled in Crow Wing County, where Heather Lynn Cross, 50, and Darcy Ronald Cross, 57, now face second-degree murder charges.
Prosecutors allege that the couple unintentionally caused their daughter Cecilia Cross’s death while committing child neglect and endangerment. Earlier, they had been charged with manslaughter, but new findings led to more serious charges.
Tragic incident inside family home
Authorities say the incident happened on August 25, 2025, at the family’s home in Pine River. Deputies responded to a call around 4:30 p.m. and found the mother attempting CPR on the child.
Officers quickly realised the child had been dead for some time. Reports noted signs such as stiffness and marks on her body.
Child found trapped in bed structure
Investigators said Cecilia was found with her neck trapped between parts of a specialised “safety bed” frame. The bed had a canopy structure, which had become loose and reportedly caused the fatal situation.
According to reports, the child appeared to have been stuck for hours before being discovered.
Allegations of neglect and unsafe conditions
Officials described extremely poor living conditions inside the child’s room. Authorities reported a strong smell and unsanitary surroundings.
The room reportedly contained:
- No regular furniture except the specialised bed
- Waste spread across surfaces
- A damaged bed frame that had not been repaired
Investigators also noted that the bed manufacturer had previously offered to fix the bed, but the offer was declined.
Concerns over supervision
Authorities said the parents had not checked on the children for several hours that day. The mother reportedly last saw Cecilia early in the morning but did not check again until late afternoon.
Experts stated that while specialised beds may be used at night for safety, children should not be confined in them during the day for long periods.
Additional fraud allegations
Apart from the death-related charges, the couple is also accused of financial fraud. Prosecutors say they wrongly obtained assistance funds by overstating the needs of their children.
The complaint claims they received thousands of dollars in extra support through the MnCHOICES program by providing misleading information.
Surviving child taken into protection
After the incident, authorities took custody of the couple’s other child, who also has autism. Investigators reportedly found her confined to a bed during the daytime when they revisited the home.
Officials said this raised further concerns about the children’s care and safety.
Court proceedings ongoing
The couple has been arrested and remains under legal proceedings. Their next court hearing is scheduled for August 3, where more details of the case are expected to be discussed.
